Travelling to and around Umbria

Plane

Virgin Express, Alitalia, Go and Ryanair all have an excellent services to and from Central Italy.  The closest airports to Umbria are at Rome (Fiumicino and the smaller Ciampino), Pisa, Florence and Ancona.  There is also an airport at Perugia for internal flights with regular flights to the international airports at Milan and Rome.  We have been campaigning to get a direct flight from Holland and Britain to Perugia airport and the governement has recently given approval for this.  Work is under way and we are told flights will start in the autumn of 2006.

Car

You can hire a car from any of the main rental companies.  Hertz, Eurocar and Avis operate at most of the above airports.  Driving in Italy requires nerves of steel and our advice is to drive slowly and expect the unexpected!  To plan your route we recommend the excellent free route planning service covering Europe on the RAC website.  Another useful service is Multimap which enables you to zoom in and out on locations and even has aerial photographs.

Train

Italy has an excellent train service which is very reliable and cheap.  There are many levels from country lines to a high speed European service between major cities.

Bus

The bus service here is also very comprehensive, cheap and reliable.  For more information, click on the website of the regional bus society Sulga that also has a direct service between Rome Fiumicino Airport and Perugia.

Coach

For group holidays we recommend Paliani Tour, a coach operator based in Marsciano in the centre of Umbria.  They have everything from a luxury car through to 16 to 54 seater coaches.

Bike

Umbria is a great place for cycling, on rural roads in the valleys, or mountain-biking in the hills. There are no special bike lanes, but it’s easy to get off the main roads, into nature and biking without seeing a soul! You can bring your own bike or rent one. On the website of the Region you can find addresses of bike rental companies: www.regione.umbria.it/umbria/bici.htm  In Perugia there are parking lots where you can rent electric bikes, to go uphill into town! Follow the signs Park & Bike.

Most trains and buses have special compartments to store bikes so that you can explore other parts of the region.

Horse

We are not suggesting that a horse is a good way of getting round Umbria but horse riding is an excellent way of seeing the beautiful countryside.  There are many horse riding centres in Umbria and many agriturismos have horses for riding.

Balloon

What better way to see Umbria than from the air?  Our association with Flight Dreams, located near Lake Trasimeno gives you the chance of experiencing the most fantastic countryside from a new perspective. Visit www.flightdreams.biz

Walk

Umbria is an excellent place for walking or trekking. In the mountains (Monti Sibillini, Monte Subasio or Monte Cucco) you will find fantastic walks on marked trails, and even in the summertime it is not too hot. You can find detailed maps in many local bookshops.
