Umbria, Lazio and Tuscany
If you want to live here permanently then you can get residenza (residency certificate) at the town or City Council (comune). There is a pack obtainable at any post office, explaining which documents you need to produce at the Comune, after which a local police officer will come to check if you really live there (normally within the first month after you collect your document). You should then spend 183 days of each year in Italy although with the relaxation of border control in Europe now it is difficult for anyone to check. Be aware that this can lead to fiscal and social security consequences if you change your residency from your home country to Italy. If you are not really going to live here for 183 days per year or more it is better that you pay the extra stamp duty so that you don’t get involved in a complicated situation afterwards.
If a property is bought in the name of more than one person then each person must obtain residency.
